Summer Learning Resources

Dear Region 14 Parents and Guardians:

As the school year comes to a close, I wanted to take this opportunity on behalf of the faculty and staff of Region 14 to express our gratitude for your support and commitment to your students’ education. We have much to celebrate this year with tremendous improvements in student performance in all four schools. From historically high preliminary state testing results at multiple grade levels demonstrating both high performance and high growth, to excellence on the athletic fields and in the arts, our students and faculty have truly made our community proud. The Region 14 families continue to be an essential factor in our success!

To assist students and their families with sustaining the growth our students have made throughout the year, we have cultivated various resources which are available below.

There are literacy, math, and STEM links for each grade level, along with ideas for practicing the Vision of a Learner attributes and links to resources for multilingual learners. Required literacy and math assignments for rising 6th-8th graders and math assignments for rising Algebra 1 and Geometry students are also linked on the site, as well as the summer assignments for students entering AP courses at Nonnewaug next school year.

To ensure that students have the materials needed and understand the expectations of the summer work, the Instructional Leaders for Math and Literacy from WMS met with rising 6th-8th graders through classroom visits at the elementary schools and ELA and math classes at the middle school. In addition, Nonnewaug’s Instructional Leader for Math visited the 8th grade classes to do the same for students entering Algebra 1 and Geometry. AP course requirements have been communicated to students by the individual course teachers in addition to being posted on the website linked above and Google Classrooms.

While it is best for the required assignments to be completed over the course of the summer, they are not due until August 29th for WMS students and September 2nd for NHS students, which does allow for work to be completed closer to the start of school or once school begins.

We hope you have a wonderful summer and look forward to your students’ return on August 27th!

Sincerely,

Dr. Taryn Fernández, Ed.D.
