Lee Skalkos, a teacher at Woodbury Middle School, received the Larry Newquist Award for Excellence Best in Show for her oil painting entitled “Dusk at Cherry Grove” at the Newtown SCAN art show.

Lee Skalkos of Newtown, teaches art at Woodbury Middle School to grades 6 through 8 and is a metalsmith and a painter.  Skalkos explained, “I have discovered a new love for old barns. It is important for me to catch these subjects during the right time of the day. I am always looking for new subject matter but most importantly I am always searching for incredible light and sometimes come to a screeching halt while driving when a scene grabs me – it’s like I can see the painting in my head before its actually painted on canvas. I have painted many barns but I am especially partial to white. I feel it is important to capture these images before they fall, as many are very old.  In a way I feel as if my barn paintings are documenting a part of a town’s history.”
