WOODBURY – The first FFA Timber Trials competition was held Saturday at Nonnewaug High School under sunny, blue skies with area teens battling in various lumberjack-type events.
The regional timber event, set in a wooded, arena-like setting behind the Woodbury school, also included competitors from Wamogo Regional High School in Litchfield and Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls.
The three schools are home to the only high school timber teams in the state.
Events included the axe throw, pulp toss, log roll, bow saw and crosscut. Unique to Saturday’s event was a relay race and coaches crosscut.
A crowd of more than 200 people attended the event.
The Timber Trials will be followed by the annual “Axe Games” at Woodland High in May, as well as various competitions slated this summer at the Goshen, Bethlehem and Harwinton fairs.
