NHS News Update - 9/16/2022

Good afternoon Nonnewaug High School Parents and Guardians,

As we close out the 3rd week of the school year, we wanted to update you on various offerings and upcoming events.

Picture Day - Underclassmen photo days will be Friday, September 23rd. Picture forms were given to students in their math classes. Students will have their photo taken at a designated time during their Math class on this day. Please be sure if you are interested in purchasing photos, your child has a completed picture form. Make-up Photos will be taken on Friday, October 28th.

Open House - On Thursday, September 29th, beginning at 6:00 pm, NHS will hold its Open House for parents and guardians. We invite parents and guardians to come to our school to meet teachers and hear a bit about each class your students will be taking this school year. Please see the Open House schedule for more information.
Freshman Parent Information Session- Also, on Thursday, September 29th, beginning at 5:30 pm in the auditorium, the parents and guardians of freshman students are invited to a Parent Information Session presented by the NHS school counselors. The purpose of this session is to provide the information we feel you may find helpful as you help your student navigate the freshman experience at Nonnewaug High School and begin preparing for post-secondary success.

School Day PSAT’s - On Wednesday, October 12th, we will hold in-school PSATs for all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors at no cost to the students. Testing will begin at 7:25 am. Please be sure that your student attends and brings a calculator and #2 pencils.

For Seniors, this will be a post-secondary planning day: we encourage graduating seniors to schedule college visits or interviews, meet with potential employers or military personnel, or work with NHS staff in the CCRC to support the college search and application process. This is time seniors should dedicate to the college application process, essay writing, and the organization of all post-secondary planning needs. If seniors students will be off campus at college visits, interviewing, working on college application materials, meeting with employers, shadowing etc., students will need to submit this form to the main office to be considered excused from school.

Resources for Students Who Are Absent - When a student is absent from school, we encourage them to check the Google Classroom for each of their courses. Teachers will often post assignments, review materials, links to resources, and answer keys to previous assignments to help students make up any work or content missed while absent. If your student feels they are falling behind and are concerned due to absences, please reach out to their teacher via email or contact your student’s school counselor so he/she can advocate on behalf of the student.

Morning Arrival Time for Student Drop-Offs - Students may be dropped off as early as 6:50 am to decrease the number of drop-offs occurring between 7:15 and 7:25. Please note that the late bell rings at 7:25. If your student is not already in class at that point, they will be marked “tardy” for class beginning next week. If necessary, please make adjustments to your arrival time with the understanding that there will be numerous cars dropping off at the same time so your student can be in their classroom by 7:25.
College Rep Visits - Many college representatives will be visiting Nonnewaug throughout the fall. For a complete list of college rep visits, please click here. Juniors and seniors are encouraged to regularly review the list and register to attend any visits with college reps through Naviance. Mrs. Green recently emailed this letter with more detailed information to all junior and senior families. Any questions about college rep visits should be emailed to the CCRC counselor Kathy Green at kathygreen@ctreg14.org

School Counseling - This week, during Advisory, the school counselors presented a post-secondary planning lesson to senior students. Students were able to choose to attend a college-related presentation or to receive assistance developing their career plan. Over the coming weeks, counselors will meet with senior students individually to assist with the college search and application process. Please encourage your seniors to make an appointment with their counselor to discuss future goals. Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s school counselor with questions or concerns.
