NHS News Update - 1/11/2023



Dear Parents and Guardians:

Good afternoon! Please note that this Friday, January 13th is an early release day for students and this Monday there is no school in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday.

Graduation date announced - The Board of Education recently set the graduation date for the Class of 2023 as Saturday, June 17th, 2023. Graduation is held on our campus and is an outdoor event. Therefore we have set a rain date for June 18th, mark your calendars.  More details will follow as we approach the end of the year. 

Friday, January 13th Early Dismissal - Friday, January 13th is an early release day for students. Nonnewaug High School will dismiss at 11:55 AM. Students will have the opportunity to purchase a “grab and go” meal for $2.00. The cost for students who receive the reduced meal rate is 30 cents. The meal can be purchased in the main lobby prior to the start of the school day or in the cafeteria until 10:30 AM. 

Midterm Exams - The scheduled dates for Midterm Exams are Thursday, January 19 through Tuesday, January 24th. Click here for more information. 

Cocoa and Cram - On Tuesday, January 17th, Student Council will host a “Cocoa and Cram” event in the LMC from 2:15-3:15 PM. All students are encouraged to come and study for midterm exams. 

Program of Studies for 2023-2024 School Year - The Program of Studies for the 2023-2024 school year was released to students today. Students will have the opportunity to view the Program of Studies in advisory and ask their advisors, teachers, and counselors questions about course selection for next year. Course registration will open in February. Please use the course descriptions and video links for electives to inform your discussions with your students about what courses align with their post-graduate plans, goals, and interests. These discussions are essential to helping your student make course selections during registration that both help them meet graduation requirements and meet their interests. 

Course Registration for 2023-2024 School Year - On February 2nd, the registration portal on PowerSchool will open for students. Students will be encouraged to review graduation requirements and discuss their teacher recommendations and course selections with their parents before selecting courses. All course registrations must be completed by February 16th. In  March, students will meet with their counselors to discuss their course selections and make adjustments if necessary.

School Counseling - The school counselors met with seniors during Advisory last week. We discussed the next steps in the college selection process including evaluating financial aid awards, accessing university accounts, orientation, and making a deposit. We also explored the critical topics of student loans and debt. 

News from the CCRC - Representatives from NVCC's manufacturing and welding certificate programs will visit the CCRC on Wednesday, January 25th. All students interested are invited to learn more.  

The first career panel in our series following the CT Career Paths will take place on February 8th. Local professionals in the Architecture and Construction fields have been invited to present on their career, experience and education. All students are invited to attend these panel presentations.

We will be offering the ASVAB (Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery) on February 9th at 8:00 am in the LMC to any 10-12th grade student interested in taking this free aptitude test. This test does not dictate a student pursue the military, however, it is a required step for students who wish to pursue the military.

SAT test prep - Nonnewaug High School is offering free SAT Prep. This course leading up to the March SAT test date will prepare students for the Math and English portions of the SAT. Secret of the Apps Workshop - Officer Rich Marsh presented “The Secrets of the Apps” to parents and caregivers at the Woodbury Library last night. For those who were unable to attend, the program will be offered again February 23rd at 6:00 PM at the Woodbury Library.

Honor Society Inductions - This afternoon, the Honor Societies for Music, English, and History will induct their newest members. Congratulations to Nonnewaug’s newest members of these organizations!
