Students, school staff and town officials gather Wednesday in the new 'Flanders Room' at Mitchell Elementary School in Woodbury.

WOODBURY — The new “Flanders Room” at Mitchell Elementary School was unveiled to the public at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday attended by town and school officials, as well as local donors.

The room restoration was paid for by local donors, including the late former Region 14 teacher Dorothy Bessette DeSomma, who bequeathed the district $200,000 upon her death, some of which was used on the room.

Region 14 Superintendent Joseph Olzacki said the room was named “Flanders” for the road that connects both Bethlehem and Woodbury, the two towns that make up the school district.

Olzacki said the new room will host Board of Education meetings, student award ceremonies and performances, and other community events.

The oval, Colonial-inspired space was designed by Nonnewaug High School graduate Rebecca Levesque, whose pen-and-ink watercolor rendering of the original Mitchell School will be one of several photos and plaques to hang from the room’s blue walls.
