8th Graders Learn About Dia de los Muertos in Spanish at WMS
Eighth graders in Dawn Manogue's Spanish classes at Woodbury Middle School learned about Dia de los Muertos -- Day of the Dead -- a celebration in Mexico and among those of Mexican heritage in the United States that occurs November 1 and 2.
Students learned that during Dia de los Muertos, families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives and decorate an "ofrenda,"or an altar as a way to honor the dead. WMS eighth graders added traditional items including photos, candles, marigolds, calacas (skeletons), and calaveras (skulls) on the ofrenda they made to honor Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
